PEKING PROPOSES TALKS WITH TAIPEI
China announced today an offer to hold direct negotiations with the Chinese Nationalist Government in Taiwan and delivered a warning against any attempt to replace the American presence there with that of “someone else,” an oblique reference to the Soviet Union.
U.S. Birth Rate Drops to a Record Low
American birth and fertility rates last year dropped to their lowest levels in history, and even the absolute number of babies born was the smallest in 27 years.

The police announced late last night that Sir Richard Sharples, Governor of this British colony, and one other person had been shot to death. The police did not immediately release any information on the shootings or the identity of the other person killed.
Thefts of Autos Go Down, The First Drop in History
Auto theft is decreasing across the country. Statistics for 1972 that will be released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation later this month will show what law enforcement officers say is the first one-year decline in car thefts in United States history.
